Kounopetra is a large rock in the sea at Akrotiri, south of the village of Mantzavinata in southern Paliki, whose slow but constant movement could be seen with the naked eye for hundreds of years. After the earthquakes of August 1953 its movement dropped sharply and today it can hardly be noticed; geologists put it down to the uneven rock of the seabed and its base, as well as the wind and sea around it. It lies close to the shore and can be watched from a spot with benches on the beach.
