The lighthouse first came into service in 1906 running on oil, stayed dark during the Second World War, was connected to electricity in 1979 and has had automatic lighting equipment since 1990. It is reached by a tarmac road of about 12.5 km from Lixouri harbour and then about 2 km of dirt road in good condition; the nearest village, Chavriata, is 5 km away and the nearest beach, Lagadakia, 2 km. The terrain is rough, so young children need watching, and the lighthouse is a listed monument.
