Kipoureon Monastery, 15 km from Lixouri, was founded in 1759 by Archimandrite Chrysanthos Petropoulos from Paxos, dedicated to the Annunciation, and takes its name from the many gardens the monks kept. It stands on a rocky ledge 100 metres above the sea and faces west, so its courtyard offers one of the most spectacular sunsets on Kefalonia. Inside you can see the icon of the Virgin Mary, the skulls of its founding monks and a piece of the Holy Cross given by a Russian prince.
