The bronze statue of the satirical poet Andreas Laskaratos (1811–1901), who was born in Lixouri, stands on the waterfront by the harbour in front of the square and has become a symbol of the town. Made by the sculptor Thanasis Apartis in 1961, it faces Lixouri with its back to Argostoli, a nod to the ‘eternal rivalry’ between the island’s two main towns. Laskaratos was excommunicated by the Church for his outspoken writing, spent much of his life in exile and is regarded as one of the most important poets of modern Greek literature.
